Statement of the Gauteng ANC PEC on the alleged racial profiling and racial discrimination by medical aid schemes

At the Health Dialogue organized by the ANC Gauteng in April, we committed to engage further with the relevant stakeholders in the Medical Health sector. The ANC is deeply concerned by the alleged withholding of funds to health care providers. This action has the distinct possibility of crippling practices across the country and rendering health-care professionals incapable of providing quality health care, which has a disastrous effect on the general populous.

Further, the ANC remains deeply perturbed by allegations raised by various formations and representatives of healthcare professionals that there appears to be some form of racial discrimination and profiling by Medical Aid Schemes, targeting Black and Indian professionals in the selection of professionals that are investigated by Medical Aid Schemes.

This allegation undermines the essence of our Constitutional imperative of building a non-racial South Africa and the ANC therefore, calls on South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to urgently investigate the allegation.

In this regard the ANC will lodge a formal complaint with the SAHRC.

If Medical Aid schemes are indeed found to be guilty of such discrimination, the ANC will pursue the relevant legal and legislative process to ensure that the practice is immediately stopped and that those responsible face the full might of the law. The ANC will not tolerate any form of racial discrimination.

The ANC will continue to mobilize and engage a wide range of stakeholders in the health-care sector to ensure its transformation and strengthen its ability to provide quality health-care in the context of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHI).
