ANC Gauteng to take part in Provincial Day of action in support of Zimbabwe

The African National Congress Gauteng Province will on Friday, 25 October 2019 participate in the Day of Action to end global sanctions against Zimbabwe by picketing and delivering memorandums at the European Union and the United States of America’s embassies in Pretoria. The sanctions imposed by the USA entitled ‘Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act’ (ZIDERA) entail both commercial and financial penalties / restrictions, as well as travel sanctions on entities in Zimbabwe while the EU sanctions on Zimbabwe consist of an arms embargo, targeted asset freezes and travel bans.

“These economic sanctions have made it difficult for the government of Zimbabwe to access lines of credit and debt-relief, making it difficult for the country to meet its fiduciary obligations and attract investment,” explains Comrade Peace Mabe, ANCGP’s PEC International Relations Subcommittee chairperson.

Mabe further points out that the impact of the unilaterally imposed sanctions is not only felt by Zimbabwe as a sovereign state and its people, but by the SADC Region as a whole. “Through the Day of Action which is targeting domestic, regional, and international audiences, we are standing with the people of Zimbabwe who have endured much suffering.”

The ANCGP will join a march organised by the Zimbabwean NGO called Coalition Against Sanctions which will lead to simultaneous pickets at the two embassies where memorandums will be handed over.

The programme will unfold as follows:

1.    Awareness March
Starting Point: From Pretoria Art Museum Park to Francis Baard Street to Hill Street ending at Pretorius Street.
Time: 09:00

2.    US Embassy
Address: 877 Pretorius Street, Arcadia, Pretoria
Time: 11:00

3.    EU Embassy
