ANC Caucus GPL salutes Public health workers
It is befitting to bow our heads in paying our deepest respects to all those who have succumbed to the virus whilst in the service of saving lives. The sterling work that is being done by our frontline troopers, the health care workers, in the fight against the virus at our public hospitals is highly commendable.
The health workers in this instance the nurses, doctors, cleaners, porters, medical experts, and professionals at our public hospitals and all those who work at our hospitals have been at the forefront of fighting this pandemic since it emerged, it is thanks to their selfless service that a lot of people have recovered fully from Covid-19 to date.
We salute health workers for successfully carrying us through this dreadful period and for not rendering our people hopeless and helpless in the gigantic battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are deeply concerned with the unfortunate statement of the Democratic Alliance, which in a time of great difficulty sought to score cheap political points by trying to frog march the provincial government to close down the Nasrec Covid facility and their opposition to our decision to improve health care facilities in the historically black townships where our people live, which currently are under-resourced, such Jubilee hospital in Hammanskraal, Dr. George Mukhari, Bronkhorstspruit, AngloGold in West Rand, Kopanong in Sedibeng and Chris Hani Baragwanath in Soweto. We will not be pushed by the DA to concentrate on the affluent suburbs of Tshwane and Joburg our work is not informed by racist backward politics but our non-racist character and we will focus everywhere where there is a need to increase our resource capacity.
We welcome the continued commitment by the health authorities to provide health workers with adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
We further welcome the Gauteng Provincial Government's comprehensive strategy and response in the fight against Covid-19. We urge government to urgently increase the capacity of our hospitals.
We urge our communities to adhere to health protocols, wear masks at all times, practice social distancing, and all hygiene protocols that have been communicated by government. We condemn the demonisation of our public hospitals by peddlers of fake news as this undermines the work done by our public health care workers.
We reiterate the call for people to avoid crowded places especially funerals which are super-spreaders of the virus, avoid unnecessary movement and stay at home, wash our hands regularly, and practice physical distancing.
Issued by the Office of the Chief Whip, Cde Mzi Khumalo.
